The Wasteland
The mountain of God is named Horeb, which in Hebrew means “wasteland.” The Wasteland is where we find God, because that is where God chooses to find us. The location of Moses’ encounter with the burning bush is not incidental to the story, but is a defining feature of it. We are invited to turn aside and see the God who sees, hears, and knows the suffering of his people.
